John Heyl Vincent, a Methodist minister, and Lewis Miller, a local businessman, founded the New York Chautauqua Assembly as a resource for lifelong learning, responding to the great need for information at the time. It grew to host a gathering of people of all ages from throughout the United States and Canada.

Chautauqua-Wawasee is the most recent member of the Chautauqua Network. Chautauqua-Wawasee is located in Oakwood Park, Syracuse, Indiana and includes homes, hotel with restaurant, large and small conference centers, chapel, playground, gazebos, swimming beach and piers. The dream of Chautauqua-Wawasee happened after a visit to The Institution over 25 years ago. Chautauqua-Wawasee is committed to the communication and implementation of the Chautauqua concept by supporting all people in the development of their full intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical selves.
